Getting to sleep had been a struggle. I felt unusually cold, largely because the air-conditioning unit was positioned directly above me, and I had a vague concern that I might wake up with a stiff neck.

Having made up most of the time lost after our late departure from Auckland, and being seated towards the back of the forward Business Class cabin, I had a fair few passengers to overtake once I entered the terminal.

I already had my boarding passes, so I was straight through security and in to the international lounge. Cathay Pacific didn’t operate its own lounge at Auckland, instead partnering with Air New Zealand.

I managed to get about five hours’ kip and woke shortly before 6am. I caught up with Vick and promptly tied myself in knots over time zones and their relationship with the International Date Line (IDL).
