Weekend in Stockholm in Aug 2023: Day 2 – Afternoon in Stockholm
Having already done Starbucks and grabbed some lunch. Time for some culture? Stockholm seems to host numerous museums. Which one to try first?
We decided to head to the Nobel Prize museum in the Old Town, so it wasn’t too far away.
We paid £10 each to get into the museum, but we probably didn’t really get our money’s worth. It’s not very big and not that impressive to be honest. We now understand why it only hit no. 29 on TripAdvisor’s top attractions!
It had one very interesting interactive section allowing a guest to pick a decade and a Nobel Prize (e.g. Peace, Physics etc) and read up about the winners in each year.
Unfortunately that section was so popular, you couldn’t really get close enough to the kiosks to use them.
We left after about 20 mins and spent some time looking at the beautiful square in which the museum was located.
From the Nobel Prize museum we wandered back to the hotel. Along the way we bumped into a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream parlour, which we bookmarked in our minds for a visit later in the day.
Back at the hotel and we enquired about the state of our room. It wasn’t ready, so we collected our bags and headed up to the Exec Lounge. The room assigned in the Hilton app said King Deluxe when we first arrived at the hotel; it had now changed to a Twin Deluxe. That made me a tad concerned.
I attempted to make a cup of tea for Vick in the Exec Lounge with limited facilities available at my disposal, but I think she appreciated the effort.
Eventually, I secured keys to a room, but unfortunately the hotel messed us about all through the day. They advised that there were no upgrades available, although a junior suite was available for tonight only. But they weren’t prepared to host us in one room and move us to another for the subsequent nights. Thanks for your loyalty!
They knew we were celebrating our anniversary and Vicktor (the guy who originally checked us in) said he was working on identifying a fabulous room for us. I had already advised that I was happy to switch rooms overnight if that helped, but that offer was ignored.
So not a happy start to our anniversary trip away.
Anyway, we checked out our room: small is the adjective that came to mind. We had a snooze and then decided to head out to a sports bar called Pitcher’s to watch the Liverpool game. They were at home to Bournemouth.
Unfortunately, Vick got the time of the game wrong and we ended up missing most of the first half! But we got a good table and enjoyed a beer and a burger whilst we watched our team win 3-1 including the worst decision to send off our new signing for an innoculous challenge.
All the pundits were up in arms at the incompetence of the ref and VAR.
Later in the evening, we walked back to the Old Town to see whether Ben & Jerry’s needed any help in clearing out their stock of Strawberry Cheesecake.
We provided our help and even paid them for providing that help. Delicious!
Back to the hotel to rest up after a very long day. Ignoring the issues with the hotel, it had been a lovely introduction to the beautiful city of Stockholm.
