Holiday USA West Coast Road Trip in Aug 2022: Day 5 – Afternoon and Evening in La Grande
On the way back to the hotel, we got stuck at a rail crossing with the longest freight train we have ever seen. It took at least 15 mins before it slowly chugged through, allowing us to pass.
Back to the hotel and we checked into room 202 which had 2 queen beds and a separate lounging area. Vick was happy with the quality of the room. We have now gotten into the habit of checking bedsheets and towels to ensure they are clean. An early afternoon nap then ensued.
We fancied Mexican for dinner this evening. The top-rated restaurant in La Grande is a Mexican, but the reviews just didn’t stack up. They were clearly fixed, so we went for the next rated Mexican which was called Cinco de Mayo.
After getting a booth, we were quickly furnished with chips, salsa and refried beans. We ordered some guacamole for $4 and we immediately had a perfect starter. No need to order any other appetisers.
Main course comprised chicken fajitas for Vick and I ordered the beef chimichanga with a chilli on the side. However, the chilli wasn’t the type of chilli I was expecting! It ended up being a large green chilli pepper stuffed with a white cheese, cover by a soft tortilla and loads of cheese on the outside. Weird!
The chimichanga was good though. We did have a real laugh with the waitress, who was lovely. Vick asked for some water (pronounced with a T) – our waitress looked at us really confused and asked whether we meant beer? We then attempted to describe what we meant: mineral water, water out of a tap etc. Still no comprendez. In the end, Vick pronounced it with a D in the way Americans do and suddenly she knew what we wanted. Bizarre.
