Holiday to Canada in Aug 2024: Day 4 – Afternoon in Brockville

The city of Brockville is really attractive. We saw lots of older folk out for walks and sitting, socialising and enjoying life.

We carried on our exploration of The Brock Trail at the Brockville Railway Tunnel, which is Canada’s oldest railway tunnel, running at just over 500 metres long.

The main entrance is close to the harbour, and it heads directly north under the streets of the city.

The railway tunnel was impressive, being emphasized by colourful lighting.

It was also very wet, the further you walked into the tunnel.

As a result, there were interesting mineral deposits on the walls.

Back in the day, one track was sufficient for railway travel.

It wasn’t busy, so it wasn’t long before we had the majority of the tunnel to ourselves.

When we had finished on the Brock Trail, we headed back to the hotel and luckily, our suite was available.

We were well impressed with what we found.

We had reserved The Vault, which was once home to the Bank of Toronto, featuring a massive two-story bank vault, our room had been artfully restored.

Downstairs was the bed, kitchen area and TV. It was a little disappointing that for a room of this splendour, they couldn’t have installed an super king sized bed.

Half way up the stairs, there was a door out on to a little private courtyard, featuring a hot tub and double-sided fireplace.

The top floor was about half the floor area of downstairs. It housed bathroom facilities, including a double shower area.

Everything was electric, including the blinds which I had to have a play with.

Vick popped the TV on to watch a bit of US Open tennis and we chilled in the room until we were ready to go out for dinner.

We had chosen to go to Buell Street Bistro, just around the corner, but unfortunately, it was closed due to “Labor Day”. Next choice was the Mill House restaurant.

When we arrived, the place was empty. It also didn’t look that enticing. The room was a little drab-looking.

For starters, we shared a plate of portobello stuffed mushrooms, which were very good and a Caesar side salad, which didn’t taste of anything really.

For main course, Vick went for a chicken and veg pasta in a creamy sauce with gluten-free pasta.

She wasn’t that impressed with hers.

I went for the spicy sausage pasta, which was quite tasty.

Overall, a little disappointed with the Mill Restaurant.

Tomorrow, we could look forward to heading north to Montreal for a 2-night stay.
