We set off for La Grande at 8am, with two stops planned: the main one for a Starbucks top-up near Boise; Vick had also identified the one and only tourist attraction between Twin Falls and La Grande, just up the road, at a place called Box Canyon State Park.

Twin Falls to Box Canyon State Park

It was a convoluted route to reach Box Canyon and we were the only ones there.  There was a $7 entry honesty fee and without any way of getting any change, we couldn’t be honest on this occasion.  To be fair, it wasn’t worth paying anything for it.  We got out and had a quick look.  The canyon was completely in the shade and better photo opportunity was a view of two portaloos parked close by!

After 10 mins at Box Canyon, we got back on the road and joined the I84 heading north. It was great to finally arrive at Starbucks in Boise, so that we could get a caffeine top-up.

Boise to La Grande

Back on the road about 30 mins later, the final 160+ miles took a little over two hours.  During that drive, we gained the extra hour as we headed over the state line into Oregon.

Arriving into La Grande not long after midday, our room at the Best Western wasn’t quite ready, so we decided to head into town to get some lunch.  We ended up driving around a few places before we found one that was open and got decent reviews on TripAdvisor.

La Grande seemed like a typical small American town set in the middle of nowhere, but it has a charm about it. It may not be a tourist destination but it’s an ok place to stop over in.

We ended up at the Cock n Bull. Vick ordered an Italian sausage gluten-free pasta and I ordered the philly steak sandwich with fries.  Mine was really nice, but Vick’s left a lot to be desired.

The Cock n Bull was a bit of an odd place to be honest. It was set in a small shopping mall and appeared to be a family-run restaurant set in the past! However, the food was fairly decent.
