This was probably the trip I’ve had the least involvement in organising — which, for anyone who knows me, will sound faintly unbelievable.
Rather than disappearing down the usual rabbit holes of fare rules, routings, and optimisation spreadsheets, I took a very different approach. I reached out to a friendly and highly capable travel agent, explained exactly what I wanted to achieve, and left him to work his magic.
He came back with an itinerary.
So, after discussing in some detail with Mrs Bloggingham, I booked it. And just like that, the planning phase was over. All that remained was the small matter of actually flying it.
So… What Route Was I Taking?
For those who enjoy a bit of aviation geekery, below is the raw itinerary:
Part 1
LHR–OSL–DOH–LHR–LAX–JFK–DFW–SFO–NAN–AKL–HKG–DPS–HKG–CGK–NRT–CGK–HKG–DPS–HKG–SYD–NAN–LAX–DFW–JFK–LAX–LHR
Translated into something a little more human, that meant I would be visiting (in order):
Norway → Qatar → USA → Fiji → New Zealand → Hong Kong → Indonesia → Japan → Australia
Part 2
LHR–DOH–LHR–DXB–LHR–HND–FRA–DOH–OSL–LHR
Which added the following countries:
Qatar → United Arab Emirates → Japan → Germany → Norway
There were just two days across the entire trip when I would not be flying. TWO! Which said everything you needed to know about what lay ahead:
Next up: Day 1 and the start of my Round The World trip of a lifetime, and the point at which this all stopped being theoretical and became very real.
