I managed to get about five hours’ kip during my first sleep session. I woke just after midnight and caught up with Vick, who was struggling with a really sore throat.
There was a local Starbucks that opened at 5am, and breakfast at the hotel didn’t start until 6am. With my next flight not departing until after 3pm, I had plenty of time to relax, regroup, and catch my breath.
I headed out on foot to the nearby Starbucks, which was about a twenty-minute walk away. It struck me — not for the first time — just how difficult many American cities make it for people to walk anywhere.
There were two bridges over the main highway, neither of which had a pavement. I ended up walking along the grass verge, something others had clearly been forced to do as well. Why make it so hard for people to stay active?
With all the hype surrounding a cold weather front heading south from Canada, I’d received multiple emails from American Airlines encouraging me either to delay my plans or proactively re-route to avoid the southern states.
I couldn’t quite understand the concern, as the weather wasn’t forecast to hit until Sunday 25th — by which point I would already have moved well beyond the area. I was relieved my plans weren’t affected, though it did make me wonder how accurately AA targets these warning emails.
Dallas was around 10°C and it was drizzling, so I got a little damp on the walk, but nothing worth complaining about.
The Starbucks was empty, which suited me just fine. The coffee tasted great, and I headed straight back to the hotel.
By the time I returned, my venti caramel macchiato was almost finished — I was genuinely tempted to turn around and go back for another!
Breakfast was a surprise. There are almost always workers lining up as soon as breakfast service opens. Not that morning.
I was first in and had the place entirely to myself for at least half an hour. It made for an amusing contrast with the breakfast I’d enjoyed the previous day in the Chelsea Lounge.
I started with raisin bran, followed by toast and jam (no English muffins in sight), and finished with bacon and Yukon potatoes.
After downloading NordVPN, I caught up on the first two episodes of the final three Traitors instalments.
Wow — I thought Series 4 was the best yet. I was already looking forward to watching the final episode later in the trip, either in San Francisco or Bali.
I checked Uber prices for the return trip to the airport, which came out at just under $30. That prompted me to consult Google Maps, where I discovered a far better option: the DART Orange Line from Hidden Ridge station, just a two-minute walk away.
The train ran directly to DFW, cost $3, and took around twenty-five minutes.
That meant I could use it not only for this airport run, but also for both journeys when I returned in a couple of weeks’ time — a saving of around $80.
I only wished I’d discovered it sooner.
In the end, I decided to head back to the airport at around 10am. Check-out was at 11am, and I quite fancied another Starbucks — this time airside.
Next up: My flight from Dallas (DFW) to San Francisco (SFO) on Day 6 of my Round The World trip of a lifetime.
