To say that the walk to immigration was long doesn’t really do justice to the distance involved — especially when the reward was just a single night in Doha.
After around ten minutes of walking, I reached a point where signs began appearing suggesting it would take a further eighteen minutes to reach baggage claim. That was mildly dispiriting.
When I eventually reached immigration, I initially thought I might be able to use the e-gates. After several unsuccessful attempts, however, I resigned myself to the manual channel instead.
There, I was greeted by a very friendly officer who welcomed me back after more than twelve years. That was when we’d last visited friends in Doha — a trip that now felt firmly in the dim and distant past.
Once through, I followed the signs for Uber and soon found myself in the short-stay car park, ordering a car to take me to the Hampton Inn in the Old Town.
The driver was friendly enough, and about fifteen minutes later I arrived at the hotel, where I had to put my bag through a scanner before being allowed inside.
I checked into room 1004, a pleasant corner room, and at that point I was very much looking forward to a decent night’s sleep.
Next up: A gallery of photos from Day 2 of my Round The World trip of a lifetime.
