Having only climbed into bed at around 5am, it was entirely reasonable that today turned into a very gentle one. As a result, I didn’t actually do very much of any real consequence — and that was absolutely fine.
I slept for about two and a half hours and, once I finally surfaced, my first task was to check the locations of the nearest Starbucks.
The only one open at that point was around a 20-minute walk away, on the far side of a major road. Getting there would have involved a fair bit of faffing about: following the road in completely the wrong direction, looping around a roundabout, and then doubling back up the other side of the street — the very street I could see quite clearly from my hotel room window.
By the time I’d mentally mapped all that out, it had started raining.
Decision made. Instead, I headed downstairs to Floor 5, where the hotel restaurant was located, and indulged in breakfast.
It was another well-executed hybrid spread, combining western classics with local cuisine in an effort to cater for all guests.
I started with a western staple: eggs sunny-side up (cooked specially for me), beef bacon, sausage, and some decidedly non-Heinz baked beans. I followed that with toast and jam, and finished things off with a serving of nasi goreng, which was excellent.
The staff were amazing. They clearly took pride in what they did and treated me like a Diamond member.
When I chose my table, I was promptly brought a café latte and a plate of two sunny-side-up eggs, and a small label was placed on my table reading “Reserved for Diamond Member”. A very nice touch.
Back up in my room, the rain had intensified, which gave me the perfect excuse to refocus on accessible Starbucks locations.
The closest one was in the adjacent mall and opened at 10am. I decided to hang around until then, using the time to tackle a few admin jobs from the comfort of my room.
It was still raining heavily when the clock struck 10am. Unsure how to access the mall — and mindful of the weather — I put on my cagoule and headed down to the front desk to ask for directions.
The member of staff simply pointed to my right and said, “Just here.”
I walked through the door and immediately found myself staring at… Starbucks.
So much for the cagoule. But how well thought-out was that hotel choice?
I took my coffee back to my room and carried on with admin. Later, I caught up with Vick when she got up to feed the cats. She told me all about her dinner party with our friends in Drayton. I was disappointed to have missed it, but it sounded like she’d had a whale of a time.
By this point, I’d completely lost track of time. It was already early afternoon and I was starting to feel peckish again.
I couldn’t be bothered venturing out in the rain, so I decided to order room service. The menu offered another good hybrid selection, all reasonably priced — so naturally, I went a bit overboard.
The internal logic went something like this: a Hawaiian pizza (£8), to be eaten hot right away, a banana fritter with ice cream (£3) for dessert, a chicken Caesar salad (£4.50) to put in the fridge for later and a couple of local beers (£7.50), just because.
Total cost: £27, inclusive of tax — and more than enough food for two meals.
About thirty minutes later, the food arrived on a trolley. The staff member wheeled it into the room, wished me a nice meal, and departed.
I’m fairly sure he was wondering whether I genuinely planned to eat all of that myself.
I tucked straight into the pizza. I hadn’t eaten pizza in years and it was glorious.
Next came the banana fritter — a little odd, but surprisingly good. The oddest part was the grated cheese sprinkled on top, which I hadn’t been expecting.
I then attempted to store the Caesar salad in the fridge, but unfortunately the plate was too large and I didn’t have anything smaller to decant it into.
Without being able to close the fridge door — and knowing you shouldn’t leave chicken at room temperature — that was £4.50 straight down the drain. A shame.
The rest of the day passed in a bit of a blur, but I took full advantage of the opportunity to catch up on some much-needed sleep.
And frankly, after the previous few days, that felt like a very good use of time.
Next up: A gallery of photos from Day 15 of my Round The World trip of a lifetime.
