After all of the pain involved in securing my golden boarding pass, it was nice to be walking through security and immigration knowing that I had avoided a potentially fatal issue with my complex itinerary.
After clearing all of the mandatory checks, I headed to the Sapphire Plaza Premium Lounge near to Gate 6.
It looked like your average lounge from the outside, and from the inside it appeared to be separated into different rooms which weren’t linked together. It seemed a little unusual.
I ended up in a nice quiet area where there was a haf-decent hot buffet. Although the problem that I could see was that the dishes didn’t really work together.
There was a nasi goreng which just looked like a bowl of rice, there was another bowl of plain rice, there was a pasta with sauce and other oddities.
Luckily, there was some bread, a toaster, butter and jam. Guess what I had for dinner?
My flight left from Gate 1D. It was a very polite and well organised boarding process. There was a team of about 8 and they even had a team huddle before boarding commenced. Very impressive.
Eventually I boarded into seat 02A. It was the oddest business class that I had ever seen. It was a 2-2-2 config, and it felt like a slightly older business class seat.
It was the Sky Suite featuring the Apex seat. It is apparently one of the best, but not in my book. Although the screen is big (23″), the IFE selection via the handset is horrible.
It looked a bit like the BA herringbone, but both passengers in a 2 were facing forwards. Each suite was accessible from the aisle and was a true rectangle. So it looked like a morgue.
Each suite had much more personal space than the BA herringbone, although (as fas as i could see) no usable storage space.
My plan was to eat nothing on the flight. Other than an initial post-take off drink, I would sleep.
I had two welcomes from various crew members. One talked me through the dinner options.
She had the menu open and she was pointing to the Japanese menu, as if I was going to be able to read it. But she was talking to me in English. Odd.
I think we pushed back a few mins late, but nothing of any significance. I was keen to get my drink and then get my head down.
In the end I didn’t get my post-take off drink, the cabin crew seemed to be really slow to get moving. So, I used the blanket provide and tried to sleep.
It was a bit of a struggle. One foot felt really cold and the blanket wasn’t that substantial. The pillow was embarrassingly small, so I don’t think I got that much quality sleep.
I woke about 2.5 hours before scheduled arrival. The lights went on and I finally got my post-flight mimosa!
I avoided any food, with the expectation that I would be able to eat in the lounge.
It was still dark on final approach into Tokyo Narita, the landing was smooth and the taxi to Gate 61 was long.
Once the air bridge was connected, I was off and heading to International Transfers, which was empty.
