I made my way up the airbridge, then up an escalator, through an automated door, and along a corridor that led into a large border control hall. There was a barrier in place that was clearly meant to stop passengers from wandering through unchecked.
That said, it was fairly obvious where we were supposed to go, so I pressed on and joined the All Passports queue.
At that time of night, it came as no surprise that the area was completely empty. I was waved straight through to a Border Control officer, who asked what I was up to, took my fingerprints from my right hand, snapped a photo, and sent me on my way.
From there, it was another long corridor, an escalator down, and then into the main arrivals hall.
I stopped briefly to layer up — cagoule, hat, gloves and scarf — ready for the chilly walk to the hotel. I used Google Maps for guidance, although in truth it wasn’t a difficult route to follow.
It turned out to be a lovely walk. Cool, but not uncomfortably so, and bright enough to feel perfectly safe along the quiet, largely empty streets. There was a fair amount of ice on the pavement, which made progress a little tentative in places, and some slush to contend with as well.
After about forty minutes, I reached the hotel and received a warm welcome from the receptionist. He checked me in efficiently and handed over the key to room 349.
A quick shower followed, along with the familiar ritual of plugging in every gadget I owned. Not long after that, I called it a night and hit the sack.
Next up: A gallery of photos from Day 1 of my Round The World trip of a lifetime.
