Holiday to Hawaii in Aug 2013: Day 6 – Big Island

Up at around 5am – sorted the laundry – planning on heading out to Starbucks for brekkie and then on to the North of the Island for a relatively easy day. Will come back later and chill for the late afternoon. Planning on having a cheap food day today and catching the sunset from our hotel room.

Laundry room wasn’t opened at 6am when it was supposed to. So we had to ring and get them to open up. That pisses me off – managing expectations is everything – predictability is what a customer wants. Machines ate some of our quarters as well – that also didn’t go down well.

Then the safe didn’t work, so we didn’t want to go out with our stuff unsecured. Security rang up and asked whether a hidden switch had been turned on. As soon as we turned it on, it worked. Why didn’t someone check that before we turned up? Basic stuff…

So we left the hotel for our easy, relaxing day out a good 30 mins after we wanted to, and that meant we didn’t reach Starbucks for our breakie until 10am. That meant I was a bit grumpy (too right – V) Two other things that made me feel even grumpier was Vick breaking one of the zips (I hardly touched it – V) on the Jeep soft top, and Starbucks not having any of the normal food in for our brekkie (agree here, why no yogurt with granola?)

I was getting really grumpy by this time. Vick went off to find some soap to help ease the zip (yes – look it up). And while she was off, I managed to fix the zip anyway.

We headed north and found that the landscape changed dramatically. We haven’t posted any pictures of the lava landscape which is typical of Big Island as yet, but you can see from some of the piccies today that the very North just looks a bit like Wales except there aren’t any cottage fires!

Headed inland and grabbed lunch at Subway. We discussed the possibility of going up Mauna Kea but decided we weren’t quite prepared – would have been good timing, since we were in the right place for heading up the main road. Will need to fit it in over the next day or so. It’s a bit cloudy so probably wouldn’t be able to see anything.

Headed back to the hotel and trying to cool down now.
