Holiday to Hawaii in Aug 2013: Day 12 – Maui – The Road to Hana

What a day today has been! We were up early at 5am and were on the road by 5:30. Stopped off at our local Starbucks for breakfast and then headed to Paia to start the Road to Hana.

We had downloaded a guide of which sights we wanted to stop at along the 40 mile stretch to Hana, and then the subsequent 50 mile stretch along the Piilani Highway. So we knew exactly where to stop.

Stops were noted by milestone marker, but it wasn’t clear when the milestone markers started so we were initially confused and thought we had missed the first few!

Finally we realized everything started once we were officially on Highway 370 and we soon got up to speed. At this time in the morning, there was minimal traffic which we were happy with.

We stopped at a number of waterfalls, and view points along the way before reaching the Seven Pools at Ochu, which was amazing. These are naturally occurring pools in a cut into the cliff edge. We both enjoyed a swim whilst the local lads did what lads do, and find the highest point to jump in from.

The last stretch along Piilany Highway was tortuous due to the lack of tarmac, and narrow roads around hairpin turns. The 2 wheel mustang coped admirably well and got us back on to firm pavement (as the Americans call tarmac), and we could both relax again.

We chilled out in the afternoon in the room and then had dinner in one of the hotel restaurants to use up our last $40 voucher. Preparing ourselves for another travel day back to O’Ahu tomorrow.
