Holiday to the Pacific West Coast in Aug 2006: Day 13 – Lompoc to Oxnard

Wow!  Slept right through until 8am this morning – feel loads better for it too.

Breakfast was ok – breakfast burritos were on offer together with my favourite cereal combination of Honey Loops and Bran with Raisins – they taste fabulous.

Hit the road fairly late (9:30am) although we only needed to do 90 odd miles today.

Stopped off at a few places along the way, but the main place worthy of notes was Santa Barbara which was amazing.  Downtown is full of clean, crisp buildings, no building work going on at all.

The main streets were lined with palms and the sun was out in all its glory – summer had finally returned!

We grabbed a coffee at the Borders book store and then walked down to the beach and pier.  We saw some interesting beach creations which effectively were begging bowls (see photos).

There were numerous homeless people begging on the streets, though none that were causing trouble.

Lunch was at Ruby’s Place which served Mexican/American food.  Nice place well worth a visit.

We got back on the road and popped in at the Channel Islands State Park which offered some great views and a 95 per cent complete skeleton of a Pygmy Mammoth (I can’t explain)!

We finally arrived at Oxnard by about 4:30pm at which point Vick realised the Women’s US Open Final was on.

So we headed down to the hotel bar and watched Sharapova thrash Henin-Hardenne.

We had dinner at an Outback diner where I had Lamb ribs which were wonderful, although the restaurant was so dark we could hardly see our waiter!
